The rich have this misguided idea that they own the rest of us. I think it is born of the thought that we envy them. No one envies the rich. We would like to live our lives without financial worries, sure. But dreams of surrounding ourselves with creature comforts are secondary to being able to provide for our families the food and shelter desperately they need. We wish to provide these basic necessities without worrying ourselves from birth to the grave about how we just barely earn enough to get by.
The rich don't know the tyranny of this kind of worry. They can't appreciate making difficult decisions such as should I buy my daughter new school clothes so she doesn't look poorer than the other girls or should I spemd a little extra for organic food so the family can eat a little healthier. Or maybe I should buy tires for the family car so I don't have to worry about my wife getting stuck somewhere when the thread-bare tires finally give out. Wealthy people are very sheltered from real issues such as these.
People with wealth are very adept at protecting their fortune, at surrounding themselves with people to help them make even more money. It's the dark side of human nature that offers a clear conscience through rationalization that they must keep what they have from everyone else. This is the basic reason why their class gives less to charities than the poorer class. This is the reason why our political system will never truly put the welfare of the ‘have nots’ ahead of or even on equal terms with the ‘haves’. Politicians are tools to be used by the rich to help them keep their societal position apart from the unwashed masses. Politicians are deeply embedded in their circle for this purpose alone. Politicians do the grunt work of passing legislation to make sure the rich are not separated from their wealth.
The haves and the have nots either fear or hate one another in the daylight but the differences have a way of dissolving when the haves want something from us, like money for the products they produce and votes to keep them in power.
The rich always have their way.
